If you were to ask me, as a midwife, what I find most magical about birth, beyond a woman’s strength? It’s that moment when the baby first closes its eyes in the warmth of a loving mother’s embrace. That’s why I believe it’s important to capture such moments through a camera lens. Subtly, unforced, unobtrusively.

From a Midwife’s Perspective: Why Birth Photography and Albums Are So Precious

As a midwife, I have always wished I could capture every moment of birth. Because each one is unique. It brings its own piece to the whole. It can be a tear, a laugh, a touch, sometimes even shyness or unstoppable strength. Today, these moments, captured in a photograph, become more than a memory; they become a family legacy, a story passed down from generation to generation. Yet, I advocate that these moments must be captured in a way that does not disturb the birthing process and, ultimately, the work of those involved.

The article Birth Photography as a Normal Maternity Facility at PMB from June 2024 describes birth as an artistic and woman-centered experience. Photographs not only record the event but become a way of telling life stories that transcend generations. Photographs become a “memory saga” that tells the child, parents, and grandchildren how it tore through brightness and brought hope into our lives.

The article further emphasizes that birth photography encourages future mothers to courageously and naturally transform the birthing experience, in collaboration with midwives, contributing to a sense of support and focus on normal birth.

  • Birth photographs affirm inner strength and femininity – they help mothers and families recognize what they were capable of at that moment anjahealth.com.

  • Professional photographers perceive emotions, details, and perspectives – like a partner’s hand squeeze, a gentle gaze, a breath of space… These tiny moments, captured in a photograph, become precious treasures of emotions Hannah Sharpe Photography.

  • Birth photographs also have a therapeutic role – they help with the mental processing of the birth experience, reduce uncertainty, and support emotional recovery anjahealth.com.

  • And more: they are a way of gifting future generations a story of beginning, strength, family, and love.

Photography in the Postpartum Period

Even in the postpartum period, photographs preserve invaluable moments: the first glance, breastfeeding, skin-to-skin contact, the first sleep at home. Scientific research shows that newborns recognize and remember their mother’s face very early on (Pascalis et al., 1995). A baby’s memories are fragile, and adults do not retain most early events (i.e., infantile amnesia), so photographs become a bridge to that period – for parents and later for the child itself.

The Importance of Photography in Loss

When a family flips through an album, they not only relive events but build identity. Newborn photographs become proof that the child was loved from day one, creating a legacy that is passed on. Studies show that even in cases of child loss, photographs hold immense value – they confirm existence and enable parents and family to emotionally recover (PMCID: PMC6572886).

Why Albums Are Precious

  • For Mom and Dad: a memory of moments that, in their intensity, they often couldn’t fully experience.

  • For the Child: a sense of belonging and proof that they were part of a loving story from the very beginning.

  • For the Wider Family: a connection between generations and a legacy that grandchildren will one day browse.

Since many memories are captured with phones today, Bluma has developed an app where you can fill out and order your pregnancy journal, baby journal, or other products directly through the app.
