Elena Skoko; Evidence-based advocacy – Italian experiences

public lecture marking International Women’s Day,
8. March 2018, from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM
in lecture hall 109 at the Faculty of Health Sciences in Ljubljana

Ever since 1985, when the World Health Organization published its first recommendations on the appropriateness of childbirth support, more and more evidence has emerged about the reality of modern maternity care. Advocacy is precisely what has helped national healthcare systems move along the path of humanising childbirth within maternity facilities.

Elena Skoko is an independent researcher, a mother activist, and a singer. She founded the Obstetric Violence Observatory in Italy (www.ovoitalia.wordpress.com) and is also a co-founder of the Research Unit for Human Rights in Maternity Care and Childbirth within the Multimedia Lab for Comparative Law at the Department of Political Science of Roma Tre University in Rome. She actively contributes to the European Union research project COST Action BIRTH and is an active member of the Midwifery Unit Network. She also developed experiential workshops titled Singing Birth, in which she teaches women how to use their voice and give birth with a smile (www.singingbirth.com). She wrote a book titled Memoirs of a Singing Birth. Her most recently published work is an authored chapter in the book The Music of Motherhood: History, Healing and Activism, published by Demeter Press in 2017.

The free public lecture will be held in English.

Evidence-based Advocacy: Lessons Learnt from Italy

public lecture marking the International Women’s Day, 8 March 2018, from 13.30 until 15.00,
at the Ljubljana Faculty of Health Sciences

The reality of modern maternity healthcare has been known and disclosed since the 1985, when WHO issued its first recommendations on the appropriateness in childbirth assistance. Since then, advocacy has helped national healthcare systems “humanise” childbirth inside healthcare facilities.

Elena Skoko is an independent researcher, a mother activist and a singer. She is the founder of the Obstetric Violence Observatory in Italy (www.ovoitalia.wordpress.com) and co-founder of the Research Unit “Human Rights in Maternity and Childbirth” inside Multimedia Lab for Comparative Law, Department of Political Sciences, “Roma TRE” University in Rome. She is an active member of COST Action BIRTH and Midwifery Unit Network. She initiated Singing Birth Workshops teaching women to use their voice and give birth with a

smile (www.singingbirth.com). She has also authored Memoirs of a Singing Birth. Her most recent publication is a chapter in the book entitled The Music of Motherhood: History, Healing and Activism published by Demeter Press in 2017.

The public lecture will be held in the English language in the lecture hall 109. There is no admission fee.

On March 10 and 11, a two-day workshop follows: “Singing Birth Workshop – Singing Birth: the sensual voice of femininity” click

This experiential workshop is intended for women of all ages and all forms of professional and life paths. The workshop places special focus on motherhood, fertility, conception, birth, sexuality, pleasure, and sisterhood, and on their life and experience through the voice.

In the workshop, we will learn:

– how to make peace with our ancestors;
– how to make peace with our own voice;
– how to make peace with our own sexual body;
– to cleanse our ears of unpleasant words and annoying content;
– to distinguish helpful rituals from harmful ones;
– to train the voice and body to create beauty;
– the power of speaking out;
– to embody voice and emotions;
– to dance free of all inhibitions;
– to create simple rituals (what to do when we don’t know what to do—which can be especially helpful in childbirth);
– the healing power of group singing;
– several simple melodies in different languages;
– to design personal rituals;
– liberating poems that help us create a better everyday life and preserve our humanity;
– to create sisterhood and circles;
– to express our own power through voice and body;
– to achieve vibration of the yoni (vulva, vagina, clitoris, uterus, fallopian tube, fimbriae …).

The workshop will take place in a small group,
so places are limited.
